There’s a time and a place for e-readers, and there’s a time and a place for physical books.

I prefer my Kindle for “fun” reading. I can’t tell you how many psychological thrillers I’ve read on there….

But I prefer physical books when I’m reading something health-related so I can easily bookmark and mark them up, which makes them easier to reference later on.

Either way, reading is one of my favorite pastimes (and probably yours, too). And it’s a much better way to spend time than doom scrolling, am I right?

As if it couldn’t get any better, reading became even more enjoyable once I added some of these nifty little accessories to my arsenal.

Now are some of these book accessories just totally extra? Uh, ya.

But do they elevate the experience? Double ya.

Reading Accessories for Books and E-Readers

It’s time to stop living in the stone age, my friend, and start embracing the conveniences of the modern world.

No more reading hunched-over, straining your neck.

No more trembling, aching hands from holding 1000-page books open.

No more reaching your cold hands out from under the blankets to turn the page.

These are my favorite, can’t-believe-I’ve-lived-my-whole-life-without-these reading gadgets.

1. Book Stand

If you also have tiny hands like myself, then you know how fatiguing it is to hold a book open for too long (especially when that book is anything by Stephen King).

Aaaannnnnd having to look down for long periods of time does horrible things to our posture. I feel like an 80-year-old lady some days.

With all the books I’ve read so far in my life, tell me why it took me 28 YEARS to find something to hold my books for me and save my neck all the pain from looking down 😭

You can use these at the table, desk, in bed – anywhere. Incredible.

AND they’re versatile. You can also use them to hold your phone, tablet, laptop, textbooks, crosswords, even coloring books. I love it!

2. Book Light

Book, meet light.

So many of us spend time reading in bed before going to sleep. Turning on the overhead light or even lamps can be too bright when winding down for bed.

And sometimes, we just can’t bring ourselves to put our book down even when our partner wants to sleep.

That’s why one of the things I love most about my Kindle is the built-in backlight.

Well as it turns out, book lights are a thing, and they make reading books in the dark possible when you aren’t using an e-reader.

There are lights that clip directly to your book for more localized lighting, and there are lights that you can wear around your neck to illuminate your book (and more).

The wearable light can also be used for knitting and such, making it a bit more versatile than just the clip-on book light.

Either way, both are great for reading in the dark. 🙂

3. E-Reader

As much as we all love physical books, e-readers are just so much more convenient (most of the time).

  • They’re lightweight
  • Compact
  • Easy to hold
  • And every single book is at your fingertips

The two main e-reader brands, Amazon Kindle and Rakuten Kobo, have many different e-reader models available that work for all kinds of budgets.

My husband gifted me a Kindle 7 years ago for Christmas and it still works just fine with daily use.

I even got my husband on board with reading more by convincing him to get a Kobo. So now that we’re both reading regularly, I feel less guilty going off and reading a whole book in a single day, because he gets it now.

4. E-Reader Stand

So I said e-readers are more convenient than physical books most of the time.

But they could still be *more* convenient. Namely in the comfort department.

I bought an e-reader stand mostly to use when reading in bed so I can:

  1. Lay flat on my back and keep a neutral spine.
  2. Not have to hold my Kindle.

I use it every single night. It’s SO much more comfortable than lying in bed with my neck bent trying to read.

And the nice thing about the e-reader stand is how adjustable it is. You can set it up in front of your favorite reading chair at eye level, or you can adjust it to be face-down over top your head while lying on your back. Or even, you could have it rotated 90 degrees so you can read while lying on your side. Pretty sweet, if I do say so.

5. E-Reader Page Turner

I had seen these bluetooth page turners online and thought they were a little ridiculous. No way am I *that* lazy.

Then I got my Kindle stand and suddenly reaching my hands out of the covers to turn the page was the biggest inconvenience imaginable.

*enter page turner*

The hype. Is real.

You know when you really get into a good book and if feels like you’re actually watching a movie?

Now imagine no longer being bothered to turn a page.

And being able to do it all hands-free.

The page turner paired with the e-reader stand makes the experience so much more seamless.

Not to mention you no longer have to reach your cold little hands out from under the covers to turn the page anymore.

This is the future, my dudes.

6. E-Reader Strap

I’ve been eyeing one of these e-reader straps to mainly use when I’m on the go and take my Kindle with me.

At the doctor’s office.

In the car.

Lunch break at work.

In the bathroom.

The strap makes holding onto the device loads easier, especially up at eye level rather than down in your lap. Love it.
